Self Care

Self-Care is important so you can maintain a healthy relationship with yourself. It can help boost confidence, happiness, and self-esteem.

Each one of us has something that is hard to deal with. Every day you are busy with something; you are working, paying bills, taking care of family or friends while trying to work on your own goals. With so much going on in life, it is easy to forget that you need to take care of yourself too. It can feel like you do not have any time left for yourself. Sometimes it can feel like it is selfish to focus on yourself.

The truth is it is not selfish to put yourself first. Self-care is giving yourself what you need mentally, physically, and spiritually to get through your day and to handle the stress that comes with it. It is a thought that says, “I am in charge of myself.” You deserve to treat yourself with care and respect, and if you take care of yourself, it is easier to take care of others.

Taking care of yourself does not have to take a lot of your time and you do not have to spend money doing so. Self-care is as easy as drinking a cup of water, eating something good for you, taking a warm bath or shower, cuddling with your pets, kids, or someone you love. It can be singing or dancing along to your favorite song. Maybe self-care is taking a nap, or watching your favorite movie. Self-care does not look the same for everyone. Something you enjoy doing and feel rested after can make someone else feel tired. A part of self-care is finding out what you enjoy doing. Try making a list of the things you do that make you feel happy or good and then try to do those things when you do not feel well or you feel stressed. Remember that even small changes in your normal life, can be difficult and do take time to adjust. Just remember that you are worth the effort.

These are only a small example of the types of self-care there is out there. Like most things in life, self-care is unique to each person and what you do for self-care is not the same as someone else. If something does not work for, do not feel like you failed, just try something new. Remember, making changes like these do take time and you might not see the difference right away. Give yourself time to adjust and remember you are worth the effort!
